Freedom

I’m sitting here at my work desk on the Fourth of July, Independence Day in the United States. My family has left for the evening, to go to the local fireworks display.
I chose to stay home and write this post. What does freedom mean to you? I was asked that today, and I didn’t really have an answer. I still work a 9 to 5 job even though I have been working with folks and building websites for years now. It dawned on me today that I live in the “land of the free” but have let myself be bogged down by the mundane. I have no excuses, and no good reason to still be living paycheck to paycheck. It is said that the economy is still a little shaky here in the US, but I see people getting new and better jobs everyday. How is it that some people can find jobs, and some people can’t? I have to tell myself that there is a disconnect somewhere in the methods of of individuals, and companies that are not flourishing in the United States today. How can you flourish in today’s economy? I think Zig Ziglar said it best, “if you help enough people get what they want out of life then you will get what you want out of life.”  I have to think that if enough people who want out of the “Rat Race” started helping other people get out of the “Rat Race” or those who are unemployed or under employed would begin to help other unemployed or underemployed folks, the United states would become fiscally sound again. If you cannot find a job start volunteering at a shelter, start tutoring students at a local school. There has to be something that you can put your knowledge behind, and help others that are less fortunate than you are. The beauty of helping others is that you do not have to have all the answers, just enough knowledge to help them move forward from the place they are standing. Likewise if small business owners would once again start mentoring new business owners, and helping them along the way how much could that increase our economy. Wisdom, and knowledge are unattainable without time, and effort. Most small business owners with any amount of track record could probably double or triple their output by mentoring a “newbie”. How? you ask, Technology. I see businesses in my everyday life that are still doing business the way they did it in the 1980’s or worse in the 1950’s. Using outdated computer systems, trying to patch things together because they do not want to learn the new system. Tried and true production methods are sometimes necessary, but are there things your business could be doing differently? One way to find out is to start mentoring a young up and coming business owner. I propose that as you help a struggling entrepreneur get his business going in a right direction, you just may find that you regain some of the edge you once had. There is nothing like working with someone who is struggling and seeing them come to higher and higher levels of success. If you want true “Freedom” forget about your struggles for a little while, begin helping other folks get what they want out of life, and see how much more alert to the opportunities that are staring you in the face you become.

Today I declare Independence, if you are stuck with what to do next, I ask you to join with me and declare your Independence too.
